Skills Learned

Intercultural Communication

One of the most valuable skills I have picked up from the International Scholars Program is intercultural communication. This first came into play during my study abroad in Germany. At first, I made many mistakes as I adjusted to different cultural norms there, using the wrong German greetings at the wrong time of day and throwing food waste into the plastic waste bin. I realized I needed to talk with natives to be able to integrate. I made some German friends, who helped correct me and eventually gave me enough insight to feel like I could properly fit into German society.

Adaptability

Adaptability is key when travelling abroad. As previously stated, I found myself making frequent mistakes when first arriving to Germany. In order to survive, I needed to take time to learn about the different cultural practices around me so that I could do things without upsetting people and respect the country hosting me. I made the effort to do my research and talk to enough people to learn what I should and shouldn't do in Germany. From adopting this, I began to feel more and more comfortable in my everyday life abroad. Now, I feel confident in my ability to adapt to a new culture, making sure to learn some basics of the language and study up on things like social faux pas and typical clothing worn.

Independence

Independence is something I have learned throughout my travels. After my study abroad, I did some solo travelling throughout Europe. For this, I had book my own flights, schedule my own transportation, and figure out how to survive on my own for a week. At first this was hard, especially when I had to navigate language barriers in places like Slovenia. But, after time, I learned how to get by, and have applied this skill to my daily life back at UF.

Leadership

When guiding the international students around Gainesville last semester, I had to grow as a leader by stepping up to support them in navigating a new environment. I found out that being a leader in this situation meant more than just showing them around; I had to anticipate some of their challenges, provide clear guidance, and create a welcoming atmosphere where they felt comfortable asking questions. Whether it was helping them understand public transportation, explaining American social norms, or organizing group outings to explore local culture, I took initiative to ensure they had a smooth transition and enjoyable time while abroad.
